Queen Size Beds

Beds come in a variety of shapes and sizes from the single sized bed to the ultra large king sized bed. Double beds, although they are all designed to sleep two people, are not necessarily all the same size. The largest option here is generally a king size bed so where do queen size beds fit into the great scheme of things?

Queen size beds are generally larger than a standard double bed but smaller than a king size bed. They may only give a few extra inches than a standard sized bed but these extra inches can make a world of difference when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep.

Many people will choose queen size beds simply because they fit the space that they have available. Some, for example, will use them in guest bedrooms or second bedrooms. They won’t take up as much room as a king sized bed but they will offer a decent night’s sleep for two people -- many standard doubles may simply be a bit cramped here.

In the past it was relatively easy to spot the difference between a standard double bed and queen size beds. Standard doubles were relatively cramped and, although they could sleep two people -- technically at least -- they wouldn’t have an awful lot of room. A queen sized bed would simply give them more room to play with without taking up too much extra space.

Nowadays, however, the lines between queen size beds and standard doubles have changed somewhat. Many standard double beds that you can buy today actually come with more space and could, technically, be called queen sized in space terms. The names given to beds tends to be stuck at double and king sized nowadays.

If you are looking at specific queen size beds then it is important to make sure that the bedding that you buy will fit the bed you ultimately choose. This may not be so important with stuff like your duvet and flat sheets but it could make a difference with a fitted sheet.

So, for example, a standard double bed sized fitted sheet may not stretch to cover the base of a queen size bed. On the other hand a fitted sheet designed for a king sized bed may simply be too big and baggy. The definition of standard, queen and king sized is all based on the size of the mattress -- so, it may be a good tip to compare this to any bedding measurements before you buy anything for queen size beds.
