Bed Frames

Just as there are various types of mattresses, there are various types
of bed frames you can choose for your bed. These frames support the
mattress and box spring, keeping it off the floor and providing
stability for the bed. There are also different costs involved in the
different types of bed frames, so it is important to know the
differences in the quality and support each kind provides.

The simplest bed frame is one made of metal, with casters or wheels
enabling you to move the whole bed very easily, even when you have the
mattress and box spring on the frame. This type of frame is available
in twin, full, double, queen and king sizes. However, the larger
frames do need a support across the center in the form of an
additional metal strip quite similar to that of the sides. There are
slightly raised edges on each side of the frame in which you fit the
box spring so that it will stay in place.

Metal bed frames are also the cheapest and when you buy a box spring
and mattress, the store may even provide the frame free. When you buy
a bedroom set, the frame is considered to be one of the pieces.
Although you usually cannot attach a headboard or footboard to this
type of frame, it is possible to buy one that does accommodate these
pieces.

The wooden bed frame works on the same principle as the metal frame.
Instead of having casters, these frames have legs that are made of
wood. They are also much heavier, making them harder to move. The legs
also make the bed higher. When you do choose a wooden bed frame, you
have much more variety in the type of bed you can have. Very
decorative headboards and footboards or sleigh beds require wooden
frames. As with the metal frames, queen and king size beds do need to
have a center support to keep the mattress from sagging in the middle.

The platform bed frame looks almost like a long box. With this frame,
you don't need a box spring because the platform provides the support
for the mattress.
